As I sit here on this chilly rainy Saturday pouting because its too cold for just a t-shirt I have to wear a sweater. I refuse to wear socks, so my feet are blue from being so cold. I also know that we need this rain. The rain will make everything green and lush and ready to cut and edge. So I wait………
I do most of the yardwork. I like to mow and edge. We had a beautiful back yard in our house of 19 years. Took lots of sweat and mistakes to get it that way. I was proud of it. We moved into our new larger home last August so we could have more space. We have 2 teenagers, they are bigger, and so are their friends. We all needed more space! So from 3 bedrooms to 4 we went.
The front yard is typical, basic shrubs in front of the window, grass, a small tree (I think it’s a mulberry tree?) right in the middle of the grass, a couple of crape myrtles on each side of the house that have been neglected and grown out of control. I’ve got some work to do to make it look like ours.
The back yard is slopped in back with rather wide side yards on both North and South sides, all grass. 2 large Bradford pears that hang way too much for my liking. A small cement walkway all the way around most of the house from the north side gate to the back door of the house. All fenced in nicely. Sort of a blank slate ready for some work. Rose bushes, hostas, daisys, elephant ears, gardenias, etc. Just some of the things I dream of planting.
So as I sit watching it rain, I dream and plan of the days to come soon of what I will do first. I want to put in a gravel patio with a fire pit lined with barrels on four corners with outdoor lights strung from poles mounted in them. We have a sunroom/bar with a TV, that still needs to be mounted, and a fun red couch, with all windows on the top half of the walls, it leads you to the backyard and out to the space that I have the patio plans for. Today it’s mud puddles just waiting for me to plant and lay gravel. And I wait…….
I love to grill and have friends and/or family come to eat and drink and visit. Spend time with each other. The small south cement patio is where the grill sits. You can see it from the south windows of the sunroom behind the wicker bar with stools. A red bistro set sits there also, inviting you to come have a seat and a conversation. But no grilling will be done today, it’s still raining.
Lot’s of work to do, the rain will bring warm sunny days and lots of opportunity for the work that needs to be done to make it ours and I so look forward too it.
